Independent study enables a student to pursue individual research and reading in a field of special interest, under the supervision of a member of the faculty. A student can enroll in an independent study in any semester, with the consent of the instructor and the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the instructor's department. When enrolled in an independent study course, students are expected to pursue specific inquiry through library or archival reading or through fieldwork. A substantive paper is a requirement for all independent study courses, and the paper must be submitted during the semester of enrollment in the course.
Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies offers specific research independent study course numbers that carry a research (R) designation. We also offer other independent study course numbers that do not count toward research requirements. Independent study courses cannot count toward satisfying any general studies requirement except for the research designation.
The application describes Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies policies regarding Independent Studies in addition to the required application form which must be turned in to Kim Carlisle, Box 90760 prior to the end of registration.
